| Quebec referendum: Marois refusing to rule out one in next mandate Posted: 20 Mar 2014 09:19 PM PDT MONTREAL - Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois is refusing to rule out an independence referendum in the first mandate of a majority government. The PQ leader had her stock answer even before being repeatedly asked during a televised leaders' debate Thursday whether there will be a sovereignty referendum if the PQ is re-elected April 7. "You know that Mr. (Liberal Leader Philippe) Couillard, in order to have people forget the Liberal years, would have you believe that this election is being fought on the issue of another referendum," she said in her opening statement. There will be no referendum as long as Quebecers are not ready."

| Harper headed to the Netherlands, Germany, with historic stop in Ukraine Posted: 20 Mar 2014 03:37 PM PDT OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper is headed to Ukraine to become the first leader of a G7 nation to visit the eastern European country since pro-Western demonstrators drove out its government last month. Harper, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, leaves Friday on a trip that will include a meeting in Kyiv with newly minted Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk to offer Canadian support to Ukrainians. The brief trip to Ukraine — Harper will spend just a few hours there after travelling to Kyiv from the Netherlands — comes a few days before the prime minister is expected to make the case for a tough, united G7 front against the Russians. Harper, one of the most senior of the G7 leaders — comprised of the United States, Britain, Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada — holds some sway over his colleagues because of his consistent warnings about Russian President Vladimir Putin, says one foreign policy expert.

| Threat of legislation doesn't convince Vancouver port truckers to return to work Posted: 20 Mar 2014 05:39 PM PDT The strike has meant only a small fraction of container truck traffic has been moving in and out of the port. The B.C. government plans to introduce the back-to-work legislation to target the unionized workers as early as Monday, while the port said both unionized and non-unionized truckers whose licences are about to expire won't have them renewed if they don't return to their jobs. "What I'm hearing from some of the members on the picket line is they're considering going to jail," McGarrigle said Thursday at the entrance to Vanterm, a container terminal in Vancouver, where striking truckers were picketing. McGarrigle said it was too early to comment on what exactly the truckers will do once the back-to-work law is in place or whether the union is prepared to risk penalties that will likely be included in the legislation.
