Calgary budget debate: council ponders improved snow clearingA debate over instituting drinking guidelines at Calgary City Hall turned into a session of finger-pointing on Tuesday as council members leveled wild accusations of public intoxication and potential illicit drug use. During the meeting, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said he had received complaints about other council members "getting blotto" and "totally drunk" at public events, and Coun. Posted: 20 Jan 2015 08:12 PM PST

U.S. President Barack Obama delivered a dig at the Keystone XL pipeline and drew a politically revealing standing ovation from Democrats during his state of the union address Tuesday. Obama took his latest shot from the biggest political stage of the year, the annual prime-time speech to Congress, with a final decision on the oilsands project expected from him within weeks. The president teased Republican opponents who have made a bill on the pipeline their very first priority of the 2015-16 Congress. "Let's set our sights higher than a single oil pipeline," Obama said, drawing cheers from his party and stony silence from his opponents.

Liberal leader Trudeau speaks in the House of Commons in OttawaBy David Ljunggren LONDON, Ontario (Reuters) - Canadian opposition leader Justin Trudeau, who polls indicate could win power in the election set for later this year, accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Tuesday of mismanaging the economy as oil prices slide. Trudeau's Liberals aim to oust the governing Conservatives, who took power in early 2006 and who have long campaigned on their ability to manage the economy. The Conservatives showed some vulnerability on the economy last week, however, announcing abruptly they will delay presenting the government's budget until at least April to gauge the impact of the plunge in crude prices.

Alaska says no rush for Canada ferry project at center of dispute

Posted: 20 Jan 2015 03:08 PM PST

Canada's International Trade Minister Fast speaks in the House of Commons in OttawaBy Julie Gordon VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Alaska can use an existing British Columbia ferry terminal for several more years if Canada enforces an order blocking so-called "Buy America" purchasing rules from being applied to its reconstruction, a state official said on Tuesday. A $15 million plan to overhaul the Prince Rupert ferry terminal, which is located in Canada, has escalated into a trade dispute with the United States. Alaska has refused to seek a waiver to the controversial law, designed to protect U.S. companies from foreign competition in transportation infrastructure projects. "If there is some inordinate delay, the Alaska Marine Highway System can maintain its Prince Rupert operations at normal standards over the next several years until we sort this out," said Patricia Eckert, associate director of international trade for Alaska.
