"This is good news if you're a variable-rate mortgage holder," said Penelope Graham, editor at RateSupermarket.ca. Variable-rate mortgages are determined by the prime interest rate, which is in turn linked to the overnight interest rate the Bank of Canada just lowered. "It remains to be seen just how much [the banks] are going to cut the prime rate, but it will be cut," said Graham.

An Edmonton woman has won $15 million playing the Lotto Max. Mary Ann Estanislao says she only ever buys one ticket, believing that's all you need if you're meant to win. Her winning ticket was from the Oct. 24 lottery and was the sole winner in that draw.

Hazmat, explosives teams at Ottawa hotel after possible threat

Police officers gather outside the Chimo Hotel in Ottawa(Reuters) - Ottawa police said on Wednesday that hazardous materials and explosives teams were on site at a hotel that had been evacuated overnight because of a "possible threat", and also said a suspect could still be inside. "We believe that there is still a suspect inside, so it's an ongoing police operation," said Ottawa Police spokeswoman Carole Lavigne, but did not specify the nature of the threat. Several nearby roads were closed by the Chimo Hotel located in Ottawa.


Freight train derails in downtown Winnipeg, no injuries

(Reuters) - Nine cars on a westbound freight train went off the track in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, during rush hour on Wednesday, but there were no injuries and no leaks, a spokesman for Canadian National Railway Co said. Seven of the cars were loaded with sand and two were empty, said Brent Kossey, a manager with the railway company. The railway said the train, which originated in Winnipeg, was inspected before departure and the cause of the incident is under investigation.
