Father and son killed in avalanche on the shores of Lake Louise, Alberta

LAKE LOUISE, Alta. - A father and son have been killed in an avalanche in Lake Louise, Alta. A Parks Canada release says RCMP requested the aid of Parks Canada Search and Rescue The release says a Parks Canada dog handler found the victims buried under debris at the base of Mount Fairview on the shore of Lake Louise. A 36-year-old man from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan was also killed Saturday in an avalanche near Blue River, B.C., about halfway between Kamloops and Jasper, Alta.

Bulk carrier runs aground off Newfoundland, all 23 people rescued

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said the 180-metre bulk carrier MV John 1 ran aground Saturday afternoon about 1.5 kilometres from Rose Blanche, but all 23 people onboard were rescued safely. The Canadian Coast Guard said the vessel was en route to Montreal from Spain when its engine failed and it lost power Friday morning. Spokeswoman Jan Woodford said the vessel was not in danger, so it hired a tugboat from Mulgrave, N.S., to help. The coast guard vessel Earl Grey was also called to the area, she said.

Quebec flag, via Canadian PressMONTREAL - A First Nations leader has a message for anyone talking up the issue of Quebec independence during the province's election campaign: don't forget about us. Ghislain Picard, chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, says First Nations have the right to determine their own future and aren't bound to the result of another referendum vote. It's useless to consider Quebec sovereignty while there's still uncertainty about the place of aboriginal peoples, Picard said. If the Parti Quebecois succeeds in getting a majority in the April 7 vote and works toward calling another referendum, Picard says First Nations will take steps to protect the interests of their members.


Canada wins Paralympic gold in wheelchair curling

2014 Paralympic Winter Games - Day 6SOCHI, Russia - Canada has an historic curling trifecta in Sochi. Jim Armstrong's rink showed its class and experience at the Ice Cube Curling Center on Saturday in defeating Russia 8-3 to win the gold medal at the Paralympic Winter Games. The victory comes on the heels of Canada's podium-topping performances in both men's and women's curling at last month's Olympics and marks the first time a country has won all three tournaments in the same year. Russia led 2-0 after the first end, but after that it was all Canada as the country won it's third straight Paralympic gold medal.


Kevin Martin appears in court for stabbing of Russian diplomat in Ottawa

Police were called to an apartment building in Ottawa's Sandy Hill neighbourhood on Friday morning, which is close to the Russian embassy.A 32-year-old Ottawa man appeared in court on Saturday on a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing of a Russian diplomat near his country's embassy.

100 measles cases reported in Fraser Valley outbreak

A Manitoba man has been hospitalized with measles. Provincial health officials are trying to figure out whether anyone else was infected.Roughly 100 cases of the measles have been reported in the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver, prompting health officials to warn that cases have begun spreading outside of the previous school and religious groups where they first appeared.
