Day 7 of Quebec's election campaign saw battle lines clearly drawn, with independence again emerging as the overarching issue. Marois's attempted focus on the economy was sideswiped by a question about whether a sovereign Quebec would be more attractive as a tourism destination. The border comments followed Marois to another campaign stop, prompting her to agree with a reporter's assertion that an independent Quebec would not be unlike the European Union, where there is free movement of citizens.

Marois wants federal government to pay for relocating Lac-Megantic rail line

NOTRE-DAME-DES-BOIS, Que. - Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois insisted Tuesday that Ottawa pick up the entire tab for moving a rail line that cuts through Lac-Megantic. Forty-seven people were killed and most of the Quebec community's downtown was destroyed last July after a fuel-laden train derailed and exploded. Marois said moving the rail line is the responsibility of the federal government. "We're looking at Ottawa because rail transport remains their responsibility."

AquaBounty included a line about its application in a statement it released last Thursday, but company spokesman Dave Conley declined comment on the application. Health Canada confirmed that the department is reviewing the safety of AquaBounty's genetically modified salmon as a food source. To date, it said, no genetically modified animal has received approval for human consumption in Canada.

Heinz recalls six baby food products because of packaging defect

Heinz baby food recallTORONTO - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced a voluntary recall of six baby food products. The agency says the Heinz Canada products are being recalled because a packaging defect could allow microorganisms that spoil food into the containers. The food inspection agency says that Health Canada has conducted a safety assessment of the products and has concluded the health risk from eating foods from these containers is very low to remote. Still, the food inspection agency says people should refrain from consuming the recalled products and watch for symptoms like nausea and diarrhea if they have been eaten.


B.C. woman could lose auto-insurance coverage after racking up more than $5k in unpaid bridge tolls

Tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge are going up, despite concerns about the accuracy of the scanning technology.I don't know whether Melanie McIntosh is a victim of circumstance or just poor money management. The suburban Vancouver woman owes more than $5,000 in bridge tolls and, according to CBC News, is not being allowed to renew her car insurance as a consequence.
