Quebecers will vote in a provincial election April 7, 2014.THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan RemiorzMONTREAL - Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard says he will make it plain during a leaders debate this week that Quebecers are facing two stark choices on April 7 — a party obsessed with sovereignty and another focused on governing. Couillard hammered away at the Parti Quebecois for its pro-sovereigntist stance Monday, while continuing to backtrack on his comments last week that he would initiate constitutional negotiations with English Canada if he became premier. The Liberal leader now says such talks are not foremost in the minds of Quebecers and that he would get involved only if others initiated the debate. "It's not an issue that is a top priority for Quebecers...Now if other parts of the country want to open constitutional talks on areas of interest such as the Senate or whatever other subjects come on the carpet, I will participate in those discussions to the extent that Quebec's demands will also be on the agenda," he said.

A worker drives past cargo containers stacked beneath cranes at Port Metro Vancouver in Vancouver, B.C., on Thursday March 13, 2014. More than 1,000 container-truck drivers have been on strike since February 26, refusing to work due to low pay and long delays at port terminals. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl DyckVANCOUVER - British Columbia's transportation minister says all sides in a truckers' dispute must resume discussions as ongoing job action affects other sectors across the province. Todd Stone said Monday that some companies are temporarily laying off staff because they're no longer receiving goods from the four Port Metro Vancouver container terminals. "The stories are coming in fast and furious from communities all across British Columbia," Stone said, adding the lack of rail cars means ore cannot be shipped from the northeast part of the province, and mining operations are also affected. Stone said the strike is affecting thousands of jobs beyond the 90,000 that are directly and indirectly involved in the strike that escalated 10 days ago to include both unionized and non-unionized truckers.

Air Canada suspends flights to Caracas

Posted: 17 Mar 2014 07:18 PM PDT

(Reuters) - Air Canada has suspended flights to Caracas until further notice citing the ongoing civil unrest in Venezuela, and said it could no longer ensure the safety of its operation. The airline, which operates three return flights weekly between Toronto and Caracas, said the suspension is effective March 18. Since early February, students and hardline opposition leaders have been calling supporters onto the streets to protest against Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and his socialist government. Airlines have struggled to obtain dollars in exchange for the bolivar currency as a result of long-running delays in Venezuela's 11-year-old currency control system.
