The modern city council: Mississauga asks citizens to help decide the budget

Mississauga City HallPoliticians in Mississauga, Ont., are currently hammering out the details of the city's next operating budget, and this year if you are a resident you can participate online. Mississauga is among the Canadian cities dragging their budget process into the modern era. Whereas budget discussions were once viewed as an internal debate for which public input was a vestigial tail, cities like Mississauga are now leading residents into the conversation. Sonja Banic, Mississauga's manager of corporate communications, was part of the team that introduced changes to the way the city approached its budget debate.


Single winning ticket sold in Alberta for $50 million Lotto Max jackpot

There is one winning ticket for the $50-million jackpot in Friday night's Lotto Max draw, and it was purchased somewhere in Alberta. One of those winning tickets was sold in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the other $1-million prize will be shared by one ticketholder in Ontario and another in British Columbia.

Lethbridge resident extradited for cocaine trafficking charges

Authorities say a Lethbridge resident with connections to a Mexican drug cartel has been extradited to the U.S. The man had been wanted in Colorado since 2010 on drug trafficking charges. "The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) thanks the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), Lethbridge Regional Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for their assistance in this extradition," said DEA agent Barbra Roach in a release.

Canada picks Irving to build Arctic patrol ships for C$2.3 billion

By Mike De Souza OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada has picked Nova Scotia's Irving Shipbuilding Inc to build at least five Arctic patrol ships for the country's navy for C$2.3 billion ($1.9 billion) and has increased the overall program's budget, government officials said on Friday. Irving Shipbuilding President Kevin McCoy said the contract requires the company deliver at least five ships, but is designed for it to deliver six if costs are contained. Canada's parliamentary watchdog warned last October the government would need to increase the program's budget or receive fewer ships than planned.
