'Extraordinary times:' Premier Selinger's job in trouble after Manitoba mutiny

Food Bank Canada report: Number of Canadians in need of help 'alarmingly' high

Food bank use in Canada increased slightly this year in comparison to 2013, and it remains significantly higher than it was before the economic recession, according to a report released Tuesday by Food Bank Canada. In the month of March 2014, more than 840,000 people received food bank assistance, one per cent higher than the same snapshot period last year. Five years after the economy's downturn, 170,000 more people per month were walking through the doors of food banks than was the case before the recession.

Man who tried to set sleeping neighbours on fire faints in court

A man convicted of trying to set his sleeping neighbours on fire collapsed during his sentencing hearing at the Edmonton courthouse on Monday.   Paramedics were called to the courtroom after Gordon Govenlock appeared to faint in the prisoner's box. After Govenlock regained consciousness, he insisted the hearing continue.

Bank of Canada head says worried about downside inflation risk

More to be done on housing risk exposure: Bank of Canada official

OTTAWA (Reuters) - While Canada's housing market has proven to be sound in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, more needs to be done to rebalance risk exposures among market participants, according to a Bank of Canada official. Potential changes needed may include creation of a private-label mortgage securitization market, Bank of Canada deputy governor Lawrence Schembri wrote in an article published by Britain's National Institute of Economic and Social Research on Tuesday. The article was based on a presentation Schembri made at the Bank of England in September. ...
