The central bank also kept its key interest rate on hold at 1.0 percent, as expected, but explicitly stated that its next rate move could be either down or up, depending on economic data. "We are more concerned about low inflation today than we were three months ago," Governor Stephen Poloz told a news conference. They said remarks in its Monetary Policy Report on how the Canadian dollar was still strong, and that its strength still posed an obstacle to exports, was a green light for dollar bears.

The cover of the 2011 census package is seen in Ottawa on May 5, 2011. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean KilpatrickJanet Churnin was handed a conditional discharge — which means she will have no permanent criminal record after she completes her sentence of 50 hours of community service within a year. Churnin will remain on probation until her community service is complete, but the former social worker said she thought she received "a fair judgment." At the core of Churnin's refusal to fill out the 2011 short-form census were concerns over U.S. arms maker Lockheed Martin's role in the data collection process. After reading a newspaper article about the corporation's software being used by Statistics Canada, Churnin worried there was a chance information on Canadians could be accessed by Lockheed Martin, or even the American government if the corporation was forced to turn over the data under the U.S. Patriot Act.

B.C. sawmill says it exercised due diligence before fatal 2012 explosion

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 03:53 PM PST

BURNS LAKE, B.C. - A company that owns a British Columbia sawmill destroyed by an explosion and fire two years ago says it will always be sorry for the tragic accident, but it insists there was no way it could have known about the hazards linked to the combustible sawdust that has been blamed for the blast. Babine Forest Products released a written statement Wednesday following two investigations into the sawmill blast, which killed workers Carl Charlie and Robert Luggi and injured 20 workers in Burns lake in January 2012. The reports by WorksafeBC and the BC Safety Authority concluded, in part, that the tragedy could have been prevented if the sawmill had taken measures to control sawdust generated by milling beetle-killed wood. Babine agreed fine sawdust caused the explosion, but the company's statement said it was only after the accident that it learned from studies that dust from beetle-kill wood is much more explosive than dust from green timber.
