Elections Canada hired 100 extra temporary workers to monitor how voting was carried out during two federal byelections in November in the ridings of Durham and Victoria.MONTREAL - Two Montrealers have been admonished by Elections Canada for taking part in a voting hoax that was documented on a popular French-language comedy show. Laura-Emmanuelle Gagne and Simon Poulin each received an extra voter information card prior to the May 2, 2011 federal election — one for their own electoral district and, erroneously, another card for a neighbouring district. On voting day, Gagne and Poulin decided to cast a ballot at two different polling stations to prove a point, with both opting to spoil their second ballot. "When it's the government that invites us, why not do it?" Jean-Rene Dufort, better known as Infoman, a satirical superhero, asks in the episode.

Medals stolen from Order of Canada recipient in Vancouver recovered: police

WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. - Police have recovered a number of medals including an Order of Canada medal that were stolen during a break-and-enter in the Vancouver area. The medals, which also included a Canada 125 medal and a Queen's Jubilee medal, were taken last Monday from the West Vancouver home of Vancouver Aquarium co-founder and Order of Canada recipient Murray Newman. West Vancouver police say a Canada Post mail carrier found a total of 19 medals dumped in a postal box on the east side of Vancouver. The mail carrier turned over the medals to Vancouver police, which, in turn, contacted West Vancouver police.
