Attawapiskat fire leaves almost 70 homeless

Ottawa taking a wait-and-see approach to the nuclear deal with Iran

OTTAWA - The Canadian government is taking a wait-and-see approach to the newly brokered nuclear deal with Iran. Rick Roth says the government wants to see every diplomatic measure used to ensure that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon. The agreement reached in Geneva during talks between Iran, the United States and five other world powers commits Tehran to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for limited and gradual relief from crippling economic sanctions. In a statement issued late Saturday Roth said the Canadian government appreciates "the earnest efforts" of the negotiating parties, but now it wants to see Iran act.

Major producer of medical isotopes back up and running after repairs made

Chalk River Laboratories, the Ontario facility that produces most of the medical isotopes used across North America, has been forced to unexpectedly interrupt its supply, leading to an advisory to patients needing treatment in British Columbia. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Fred ChartrandTORONTO - The aging Chalk River nuclear reactor was back up and running on Saturday after an unplanned shut down which had triggered worries of a possible medical isotope shortage. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited said repairs had to be made to the fuel rod flask — which fuels and de-fuels the reactor. "AECL has begun processing and will resume supplying molybdenum-99 to its customer, Nordion Inc., over the weekend." Molybdenum-99 isotopes made by nuclear generators are used to obtain technetium isotopes, which are needed for a wide range of medical tests including diagnosing pulmonary embolisms — potentially fatal blood clots in the lung — or blockages in arteries that lead into the heart.

MONTREAL - The federal government is coming under attack for its handling of one of Canada's busiest bridges. NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair says Prime Minister Stephen Harper needs to personally take charge of plans to build a replacement for Montreal's crumbling Champlain Bridge. Mulcair says the Conservative government's handling of the file has been "inexcusable" and says construction of a new bridge should have been in place a long time ago. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian WyldATTAWAPISKAT, Ont. - A federal MP says a fire that forced about 70 residents from improvised housing in the remote Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario could have easily turned into a disaster. Charlie Angus, the New Democrat MP for the area, says it's lucky no one was hurt or killed in the blaze that broke out in a set of inter-connected construction trailers used as a makeshift housing complex. The evacuees were flown nearly 400 kilometres south to Kapuskasing by the Ontario government on Saturday, arriving in the late afternoon and evening, the government posted on its website. Angus says he spoke to Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence and band councillors on Saturday morning and was told the cause of the fire is believed to be candles used for lighting after storms knocked out electricity.
