| Pensions and feds job grant program top agenda for premiers' meeting Posted: 14 Nov 2013 08:07 PM PST TORONTO - Improving retirement incomes and making the federal job grant program more flexible will be high on the agenda when Canada's provincial and territorial leaders meet in Toronto on Friday _ although almost half of them will participate by phone. Host Premier Kathleen Wynne warns of "a huge economic crisis" if steps aren't taken now to reform the Canada Pension Plan, and vows to set up an Ontario retirement income plan if there's no agreement on the CPP. Prince Edward Island has proposed increasing maximum CPP contributions to $4,681.20 a year from $2,356.20 starting in 2016, and hiking the maximum annual benefit to $23,400 from $12,150. "We're all facing significant challenges around our own pension plans in our provinces, but also in terms of the Canadian Pension Plan," said Premier Kathy Dunderdale.

| Parti Quebecois values charter gets a boost, with help of Liberal Muslim MNA Posted: 14 Nov 2013 03:53 PM PST QUEBEC - In a political boost to Quebec's controversial values charter, the only Muslim woman in the provincial legislature has broken ranks with her Liberal party's steadfast opposition to the plan. Fatima Houda-Pepin wrote in a letter to The Canadian Press that she is "flabbergasted," "hurt" and "shocked" by one of her colleagues' comments on the chador, wondering if her party's views on equality between men and women was modeled on those of countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. "I refuse any drift toward cultural relativism under the guise of religion, to legitimize a symbol like the chador, which is the ultimate expression of oppression of women, in addition to being the symbol of radical fundamentalism," she wrote. The reaction was to comments by Marc Tanguay, her party's secularism critic, who said he would welcome Liberal candidates wearing the chador and would be happy to sit with them in the legislature.

| Border initiatives between Canada and U.S. moving far too slowly: John Manley Posted: 14 Nov 2013 03:18 PM PST John Manley says a historic opportunity to slash red tape at the Canada-U.S. boundary is in real danger of slipping away. Progress so far has been "disappointingly modest," Manley says in prepared comments obtained by The Canadian Press in advance of his meeting Friday with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and 100 Canadian and U.S. business leaders in Detroit. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama announced the Beyond the Border and Regulatory Co-operation Council initiatives during a meeting at the White House in December 2011. The border thickened significantly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, with many Americans, elected and otherwise, erroneously believing that the perpetrators entered the U.S. via Canada.
