Former Metis member of Parliament passes away in British Columbia

PENTICTON, B.C. - The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples says a high profile Métis leader who was elected to Parliament died Friday in the south Okanagan city of Penticton, B.C., Eugène Rhéaume was 80. Rhéaume ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House in March 1962, but he was elected to represent the opposition Progressive Conservatives in the Northwest Territories one year later when Lester Pearson was the Liberal prime minister. The congress' National Chief Betty Ann Lavallée says Rhéaume was an honorary member of the organization and a member of the Aboriginal Order of Canada.

One of the Canadian Forces Cormorant search and rescue helicopters landed in Iqaluit Tuesday evening on the way to Arctic Bay.OTTAWA - The Department of National Defence says the Canadian Forces has assisted the United States Coast Guard in seizing more than 1.1 tonnes of cocaine in the eastern Pacific Ocean. During a search of a suspect vessel on Oct. 25, crew members from HMCS Edmonton and a U.S. law enforcement team uncovered 639 kilograms of cocaine. HMCS Edmonton is based at Esquimalt, B.C., while the CP-140 Aurora aircraft is based at 19 Wing Comox, B.C. Lt.-Gen. Stu Beare says the seizures demonstrate the ability of the Canadian Armed Forces to suppress illicit trafficking.

Deputy mayor hopes Rob Ford will make 'right decision'TORONTO - Toronto's deputy mayor reportedly met with Rob Ford on Saturday to relay concerns stemming from the latest accusations related to an alleged crack video. Media reports say Norm Kelly had a one-on-one meeting with Ford, and Kelly told several media outlets on Saturday that the mayor would have an "announcement" but did not elaborate. Doug Ford were to host their weekly Toronto radio show Sunday, Newstalk 1010 program director Mike Bendixen confirmed on Twitter on Saturday. He added Ford will address "some of the news from this week" on air.

Mike Duffy's contested expenses, contradicting the version of events provided to police by the prime minister's former chief of staff. Sen. Irving Gerstein, the chairman of the Conservative Fund Canada and former jewelry chain titan, delivered his report on the party's finances at the close of the party's biennial convention on Saturday. For the first time, he addressed the discussions he had with Stephen Harper's ex-chief of staff Nigel Wright about paying back Duffy's living expenses. Gerstein appeared to back Harper's line of attack on Wright — that he was the only one seeking to cover Duffy's bill.
