Police have arrested a Brantford-area man in connection with a number of vehicle thefts from GO Transit lots in Durham region.  Police say nine vehicles were reported stolen, and two more were damaged during attempted thefts, in GO parking lots in Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa between Sept. 3 and Oct. 15. Eugene White, 41, of Oshweken, Ont. was arrested on Oct. 23 upon arriving at the Pickering GO lot on a train.

Section 83.3 of the Criminal Code allows for preventive arrests, among other measures, when police "believe on reasonable grounds that a terrorist activity will be carried out." Corporal Nathan Cirillo, 24, was one of two soldiers killed in a pair of attacks last week that police said were carried out independently by radical recent converts to Islam. The assaults took place as Canada's military was stepping up its involvement in air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Bob Paulson said last week's killings in Ottawa and outside Montreal, which he said appeared to be carried out with minimal planning or preparation, show the nation faces a "serious" threat. "While we are facing this threat at home, we must focus our efforts on preventing individuals traveling abroad to commit acts of terrorism," Paulson said. If these individuals return with training and/or battle experience, they pose an even greater threat to Canada and our allies." Paulson's remarks followed the fatal shooting on Wednesday of a Canadian soldier standing guard at an Ottawa war memorial by a man who then charged into the Parliament building.
