| Teen girls with mental health issues have higher risk of pregnancy: study Posted: 09 Feb 2014 09:00 PM PST TORONTO - Adolescent girls with a major mental health disorder are three times more likely to get pregnant than those without a mental illness, say researchers, underscoring the need for specialized prevention programs for this vulnerable group of teens. In a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, the researchers examined live birth rates in Ontario from 1999 to 2009 in 4.5 million girls aged 15 to 19, with and without a major mental health illness. The study found pregnancy rates among girls with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or major depression were not only three times higher, but they also have been declining at a far slower pace than those for adolescent females without a mental health diagnosis. Although birth rates for both groups of teen girls dropped over time, the gap between them appeared to be widening slightly during the 10-year study period.

| Sick leave policy for public servants outdated: Treasury Board President Posted: 08 Feb 2014 05:16 PM PST HALIFAX - Treasury Board Minister Tony Clement says changes he has in mind for changing sick leave policy for public servants would tackle shortcomings with the outdated current setup such as addressing long term health issues like mental illness. Clement said he's proposing a format that would include five to seven sick days a year, a short term disability leave of a week to six months and long term leave for more than six months. The changes would also eliminate bankable sick days, he said. Speaking at a provincial Progressive Conservative conference in Nova Scotia, Clement said the proposed changes are fair and would do more to address things like mental illness than the current system does.

The 45-year-old program that allows First Nations to police their own communities in partnership with the RCMP will be terminated in just over a year, Swan said. | Canadian survives gunshots after defending school group in Dominican Republic Posted: 09 Feb 2014 08:22 PM PST WINNIPEG - Family members of a Canadian who was shot multiple times while defending a group of Manitoba school students in the Dominican Republic are revealing details of what happened during the frightening robbery. The family says that Les Lehmann, who lives in the Dominican Republic and manages an apartment complex, suffered nine bullet wounds and was stomped by the armed intruders during the incident late last month. It says Lehmann found a baseball bat and pursued them, and then hit them several times with the bat before the robbers opened fire. "Les is surprised to hear people calling him a hero — it was his natural reaction — a reflex to the threat that the humanitarian group might have be harmed," the family says on the website.
