The Canadian government is trying to determine if there is any truth to a Sri Lankan media report that a New Democrat MP is under house arrest in the Asian country. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian WyldOTTAWA - The Canadian government says there is no arrest warrant out for a New Democrat MP in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan media and a Tamil website were reporting that Rathika Sitsabaiesan (RAH-tih-kah sit-sah-by-EE-sahn) was under some sort of house arrest in the Asian country. The Columbo Gazette attributed the news to local media reports from the community of Jaffna that Sitsabaiesan had been confined to her hotel. A Tamil website, TamilNet, posted an account saying that some Sri Lankan officials were stationed at Sitsabaiesan's hotel Tuesday night and were not allowing anyone to visit her.

Relative Randy Paskall posted a heartbreaking message on Facebook.

Ottawa cracks down on temporary foreign workers; 'bad policy,' says critic

Many farmers in the Annapolis Valley depend on temporary foreign workers to harvest their crops.The rules empower government officials to conduct workplace inspections without warrants and to blacklist employers who aren't complying. The regulations also allow government officials to interview foreign workers about their working conditions and to demand documentation from employers proving they've complied with the federal Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

About 2,300 customers remain without power today — about 1,300 of them in Ontario, including nearly 800 in Toronto — another 250 in Quebec, and roughly 800 more in New Brunswick. NB Power spokesman Brent Staeben said all but 200 of the utility's customers should have power to ring in New Year's Day. Meanwhile, gift cards donated by grocery stores to help compensate those who had to throw out food during the power outages were being handed out starting Tuesday at Ontario Works offices in Toronto.

GOLDEN, B.C. - A group of backcountry skiers has been rescued after being caught up in an avalanche near Golden, B.C., not far from the Alberta boundary. RCMP received a call from the International Emergency Response Reporting Centre on Sunday indicating that a personal emergency locator beacon had been activated.
