Meskine was the victim of an unprovoked attack blocks from the 22nd Street SkyTrain station on Tuesday. Police arrested a suspect shortly after the attack.The victim of a botched robbery in New Westminster died in hospital Friday after spending his final days, including his 19th birthday, in a coma.

Anxious passengers found themselves stranded in airports from Toronto to St. John's, N.L., days before Christmas. Among them was Bradley Russell, on a break from work in Fort McMurray, Alta., who was trying to fly home Sunday to his wife and four-year-old son in Gander, N.L. "I've got a little boy, he wants me home, so I need to get home," said Russell as he searched frantically for an alternative flight at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, where many flights were listed as delayed or cancelled through Sunday night.


B.C. ambulance officials placed on paid leave; investigator called in

VANCOUVER - The top two officials in charge of ambulance services in British Columbia have been placed on paid, administrative leave. Darwin Sauer of the Provincial Health Services Authority says his agency has also hired a third-party investigator to review what he calls management issues concerning Michael MacDougall and Les Fisher. He says MacDougall is the executive vice-president of the health-services authority and president of BC Emergency Health Services, and Fisher is the chief operating officer of the BC Ambulance Service. He says Carl Roy, the interim president and chief executive officer of the health-services authority, and Peter Thorpe, an executive director for the ambulance service, will assume the positions.

Alberta man dies from avalanche in B.C. after snowboarding out of bounds

VANCOUVER - An Edmonton man who died in an avalanche in eastern British Columbia on Friday was remembered as the kind of person who could make people smile and forget about their problems. A friend and posts on a Facebook memorial page identified the man who died just outside of the community of Golden as Shane Schroeder. Police and search-and-rescue teams responded to a call from a rider who was with Schroeder at the time of the avalanche, which happened in an out-of-bounds area near the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, police said. Scott Dougherty, a friend of Schroeder from Edmonton, said Schroeder had a knack for making people feel better.

But Ontario's premier appears to be bypassing Rob Ford as she coordinates recovery efforts with municipalities affected by the storm. Kathleen Wynne held a news conference on Sunday to talk about the province's role and she reeled off a list of mayors that either she or her office has contacted. Ford was not on the list _ Wynne said she talked to deputy mayor Norm Kelly about how the province can assist.
