Mental health cuts at MUHC superhospital worry doctors, patients

Posted: 05 Feb 2015 06:21 PM PST

There are worries that mental health patients will be left out in the cold as the McGill University Health Centre superhospital begins opening its doors. The reorganization that goes along with the superhospital means the number of psychiatric beds at the MUHC will go from 49 to 42. Already the number of psychiatric beds is being cut at the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Montreal General Hospital. The superhospital opening is just months away and some doctors are wondering how building a world-class, state of the art facility would come at such a cost to patients with mental health issues.

Toronto Island airport emergency preparedness questioned

Toronto Island airport emergency preparedness questionedCritics are questioning whether Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is properly equipped to deal with a disaster, pointing to a recently uncovered report that raised similar questions more than 20 years ago. Lawyer Brian Iler, who has long lobbied against expanding the Toronto Island airport, recently uncovered a 1993 report about whether it could respond to a large-scale plane crash, such as the disaster seen earlier this week in Taipei. The 58-page report recommended building a bridge because the airport's "present means of access" to the mainland — the island ferry — was insufficient for moving people and equipment in event of an emergency. "You do require a number of emergency vehicles in the event of a major problem — the report talks about 40 to 50 within half an hour," Iler said.

File photo of Canada's Prime Minister Harper with Canada's Foreign Minister Baird during a signing ceremony in BeijingBy David Ljunggren OTTAWA (Reuters) - The sudden resignation of Canada's foreign minister has revealed strains inside the ruling Conservatives and complicates their bid to extend a decade in power in elections this October. John Baird - a key ally of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and an experienced campaigner - quit on Tuesday, saying he wanted to do something else after 20 years in politics. He was also upset that Harper's office would not allow him to use government jets more often when on official travel. Just as significantly, two people familiar with Baird's thinking said he had concluded the low-tax tough-on-crime Conservatives did not have a good chance of winning another majority in the next election.

Ottawa 'very concerned' over Chinese detention of Canadian man

Posted: 05 Feb 2015 06:57 AM PST

Canada voiced heightened concern on Thursday over Beijing's detention of Canadian Kevin Garratt, who ran a Christian coffee shop near the Chinese border with North Korea, while welcoming the release of his wife. "While we welcome the recent decision to release Julia Garratt, the government of Canada remains very concerned with the detention of Mr. Garratt.  We have raised the case at the highest levels and will continue to raise it with senior officials," the office of junior foreign minister Lynne Yelich said in a statement. Kevin Garratt was detained on suspicion of stealing and prying into state secrets, a move which paves the way for his formal arrest and possible prosecution.
