Scope of surprise bird flu outbreak still unknown

Two more farms in B.C.'s Fraser Valley, just east of Vancouver, were quarantined Wednesday, bringing the number of poultry operations being investigated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to four, said chief veterinarian Dr. Harpreet Kochhar. Chief B.C. Medical Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said there's no evidence of people being infected by the virus, though health officials are prepared to isolate and treat anyone who might show symptoms.

The RCMP in Quebec said late Wednesday that a 15-year-old is facing charges under 83.181 of the Criminal Code — which involves leaving or attempting to leave Canada to participate in the activities of a terrorist group.

European Parliament lawmakers put the plans back on the agenda by voting against the EU executive's proposal to abandon the scheme. The veto vote was passed at committee level, meaning it still has to get through a full session of the European Parliament in the coming weeks in order to force the European Commission to come up with a new proposal. ...


Canada charges 15-year-old with terrorism-related offences

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canadian police charged a 15-year-old youth with terrorism-related offences on Wednesday, alleging that the teenager had committed a robbery "for the benefit, or at the direction, of a terrorist group." The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) did not name the teenager, who they say had allegedly planned to leave Canada to join "terrorist activity abroad." He appeared in a Montreal court on Wednesday. ...
